Several Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Hits A Delta Airlines Flight into Sydney, Australia
Multiple passengers and crew were hurt following a Delta Airlines flight originating in Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia encountered rough air on Friday morning.
The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, a company official told. A number of the onboard staff required medical attention.
Emergency medical services reported they assessed five patients, and took a trio to the hospital with relatively minor issues that included spinal discomfort and migraines. Those affected were between their thirties and seventies.
It is the newest example of aircraft being hit by severe turbulence, with researchers saying that global warming is a key driver.
The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and a crew of 15 on the aircraft, the Delta spokesperson added, stating that the plane landed "without further incident" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.
Emergency responders indicated they were alerted just only 180 seconds before the plane arrived, and response teams were standing by on the runway.
The reasons turbulence is getting more common - and potentially more dangerous.
In the previous year, twenty-five passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta Airlines flight, travelling from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, hit "significant" atmospheric disturbance just 120 minutes into the transoceanic journey, and diverted for an precautionary landing.
Earlier this year, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight endured a harrowing brief five-second of severe turbulence. One passenger lost their life and numerous people sustained injuries, as individuals not fastened in were thrown from their seats and were slammed back.
Turbulence is not uncommon during flights, and while cases of strong or severe turbulence appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.

As global warming modifies weather patterns, specialists caution that air travel could become less smooth: shifts in temperature and shifting wind patterns in the jet stream level are expected to increase the frequency and intensity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
